FBISE Introduces New Exam Pattern With 50% MCQs for Five Subjects
The Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE) has introduced a revised examination pattern for five major subjects at the SSC and HSSC levels. Under the new system, question papers will include an equal distribution of multiple-choice and descriptive questions.
The revised pattern will apply to Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Computer Science. Students appearing in these subjects will have 50% MCQs and 50% descriptive questions, marking a significant change in the way FBISE examinations will be structured.
The new examination pattern was approved by the FBISE Board of Governors during its 124th meeting held on July 28, 2026. According to the board, implementation will take place in phases under the Inclusive Scheme of Studies 2024, which carries a total of 1,200 marks.
FBISE New Exam Pattern 2026
Under the revised examination system:
- 50% of the paper will consist of MCQs.
- 50% will consist of descriptive questions.
- The pattern will initially apply to Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Computer Science.
- The revised system will be introduced under the Inclusive Scheme of Studies 2024.
- The total scheme carries 1,200 marks.
Students should therefore prepare for both objective and descriptive portions of their examinations.
Phase One: Second Annual Examination 2026
The first phase of the new examination pattern will begin with the Second Annual Examination 2026.
The revised pattern will apply to SSC-I and HSSC-I students appearing in the Second Annual Examination 2026. It will cover fresh students taking these examinations for the first time under the Inclusive Scheme of Studies 2024.
Students appearing in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Computer Science should familiarize themselves with the revised assessment structure before the examination.
Phase Two: First Annual Examination 2027
The second phase will begin with the First Annual Examination 2027.
The revised pattern will be extended to SSC-II and HSSC-II students who appeared in the Second Annual Examination 2026 under the new examination pattern.
The board will also apply the revised system to SSC-I and HSSC-I students appearing in the First Annual Examination 2027 under the Inclusive Scheme of Studies 2024.
Phase Three: First Annual Examination 2028
The third phase will start from the First Annual Examination 2028.
At this stage, FBISE will extend the revised examination pattern to SSC-II and HSSC-II students who previously appeared in their respective SSC-I or HSSC-I examinations under the same system.
Subjects Included in the New FBISE Exam Pattern
The 50% MCQs and 50% descriptive question pattern will apply to:
- Mathematics
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Computer Science
Students studying these subjects should focus on both conceptual MCQs and detailed written answers.
FBISE Assessment Framework and Model Papers
FBISE has also developed supporting materials to help students and teachers understand the revised examination structure.
These include:
- Assessment Frameworks
- Model Question Papers
- SLO Alignment Charts
- Tables of Specifications
The materials have been prepared for the five subjects covered by the new examination pattern and are available on the official FBISE website.
Students can use the model papers and assessment resources to understand the expected question structure and prepare accordingly.
